Operating Systems

Overview

Operating Systems (and Applications) serve as templates for configuring virtual machines (VMs). Use these templates to standardize VM deployment and maintenance.

To view available Operating Systems or create new ones, navigate to:

Images > Operating Systems

Operating Systems provided by SolusVM are organized into Operating System Families, each containing multiple Operating System Versions.

Supported Filesystems for Operating System Images

SolusVM requires operating system images to use specific filesystems for proper functionality. When adding new OS images, ensure they are prepared with the following supported filesystems:

  • Linux: ext4, xfs
  • Windows: ntfs

Important:

Operating system images that do not use these supported filesystems may not function correctly or may fail to deploy. Always verify the filesystem format before adding a new OS image to SolusVM.

Managing Default VM Settings for Operating Systems

Each KVM Operating System Version allows you to set the default Disk Driver and Firmware options. These settings apply automatically to:

  • Newly created VMs using the selected Operating System Version.
  • VMs reinstalled using this Operating System Version.

Note:

Changing these default settings after VM creation will not affect existing VMs.

Available Disk Drivers:

  • scsi
  • virtio
  • ide
  • sata

If you don’t select a specific disk driver, the default setting configured under Settings > Compute Resources > Virtual Server Disk Driver is applied.

Available Firmware Options:

  • bios
  • efi
